Kitchen hacks for the busy, busy mom

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

Moms!

I know you have NO time, a lot is expected of you and you are here on Self-imposed leisure time. Read on!

Quick clean : Greens and spinach

I write here mostly with reference to Indian cuisine. You mostly find the greens bunch-tied, Leaving the tie-rope/fibre as it is and first chopping everything below it helps quicker disposal of near-root portions. A simple shower under the tap must wash remaining impurities

Chop them, then a quick dip in water and they soak in just enough water to be quickly blanched fried.

Set the meal table first

Helps getting in a priority perspective. Otherwise, already tired, one may begin with cleaning or making a dish by dish and ultimately forgetting to set table in time. This shows the family members that you have everything under control

Quick kitchen clean

Take the trash out first so you have room for new waste. Arrange the bigger elements first, make space over the stove and counter, finally begin washing, scrubbing. Even though the kitchen isn't clean first, it will look organised.

Crush and de-skin

Days of cutting the edges and hand peeling garlic is history. Slicing them in half also works. One pounding blow in the mortar and the peel comes off. This also applies to shallots if you are grinding them later on and don't want them to maintain rigidity As for onions, cut them longitudinally and peel them off quicker.

Doing the dishes

However big your sink is, categorize the cutlery and utensils separately. This allows all spoons to be washed at once and all the plates follow and so on. That about saves you stress and time.

Try not to save anything for " Later on":

This is a tip than a hack. Tomorrow, like they say never comes. Though you want to minimize wastage and eat previously saved portions, most moms like to save and refrigerate left-overs but how much chance does old food have in preference to new freshly prepared meal? Close to zero may be. Hence either throw them away or heat them and set them on the table first.

Cut Okra / Bhendi/ Lady's finger /other names it has like this:

Place them on chopping board horizontally and arrange multiple okra one below the other so you can easily chop them off chop ..chop ..chop in under 2 minutes.

Refrigerate loose kneaded dough:

Poori/ Roti/ Paratha/ Puff pastry dough too loose that it sticks over the roller board and needs mountains of flour?. Refrigerate them for 20 minutes (Do not freeze) to get it in shape. Like literally, or leave it over night with medium refrigeration. And immediately cook/ fry after rolling so it does not tear after dough regains its squishy consistency.

Always wash cooking utensils first:

So you are never short of resources for meal prep. May be wash them always the previous night. It helps my hazy early morning mind start cooking. The pan, pot, skillet and kettle must always be clean after use.

Grate all veggies possible:

All sturdy veggies can be grated than cut or chopped to save time, like carrots, radishes, pumpkin ( if its really sturdy or you may cut yourself). Never grate until the smallest piece, cut them out using small grate section later.

Take a long early morning tea-time/ workout/ you time

This helps you set the day's routine. Clears the mind.

That is all I have left to share. If you have more expert tips, leave them in the comments below.
